Who else is excited for this game? im hoping it will alleviate a lot of the complaints folks had about 3e. I want to hear what my fellow nerds think about this one

Totally missed this post. I love ti3, I think I would love fourth edition. The main issue is that I will never find someone to play with, so there’s on point in even thinking to purchase it. I hope I can give it a try at Modena, this April...
It seems like commodities and technology may help a lot in reducing playing time, but still, 6/7 hours is a huge lot. I also liked that they nerfed yssaril, they were really overpowered. I am a little concerned about tech objectives, but i’ve never actually tried the game, so I don’t know...

I've played once 3rd ed, and couple weeks ago I played 4th. To me it seemed that rules were made a bit more clearer and shorter (still, rulebook is almost like a novel). We had 5 players and one of us had been played both editions many times, others were beginners. We played for 12 hours... I love this game It feels overwhelming when you read the rules for first time, but it's actually quite simple once you get the hang on it. It's not the rules that you have to master to be awesome at this game, it's the tactics and politics. Pretty much same thing as with AGOT

Actually, now that I think back, since we had couple first timers, our most experienced player gave us a step-by-step tour of the rules. That took about 2hrs and we did take a little break to get food from restaurant next door. We ate and played the same time. So I exaggerated a bit, actual play time was about 9 hrs.

I freaking love this game and have played it a multitude of times.  There are also 2 expansions that add new planets, races, players, etc.

Well, nine hours is still a lot, but actually more understandable. I find especially frustrating the teaching part, since it chews up a lot of time, usually way more than an hour.
By the way, i forgot to ask: who won? what were the races in play?

We had the Federation of Sol, Sardakk N'orr, the Ghosts of Creuss, the Arborec and the Embers of Muaat who I played and won

I found the Ghosts most frighting and interesting, because of their flagships ability to pop up just about where they want. Of course a map with no or just one wormhole pretty much ruins their game.
