Topic: Tie breaker?
Posted: 2015-Jun-02 16:49
Hi there,

Can someone clarify tie break rules for me? I was in a game that ended recently at turn 10, two players had 6 areas each however the player with 3 strongholds 3 castles won over the person with 4 strongholds 2 castles? I was always under the impression that strongholds were the tie breaker. The latter player also had more territory and units. The only thing I can see that that the winning player had was 2 home areas.

Can someone confirm?

The tie breakers used on this site are, in descending orders of importance:

1. number of castles (castles or stronghold are the same)
2. Position on the supply track
3. Numer of power tokens
4. Position on the Iron throne track

Since we use a ranking mechanism on the site, it was necessary to have a system in which ultimate tie are impossible (hence the iron throne track rule).

Also, the rule about the number of stronghold favors some houses unjustly in my opinion. (Lanni in a 3p would simply sit back with 4 boats in ironman's bay and 3 knights in riverrun and laugh for 5 turns lol while stark only has access to 1 stronghold and bara 2).

AS indicator, you can follow the ranking order in the top right corner of every game and player are listed with the abovementionned tie breaker in orders as numer 1 to 6.

Hope this clarifies everything for you.

In addition, that are (except from not distinguishing castles and strongholds) standard 2nd ED rules.

Ties in the end were only possible in the 1st Edition.

Yup it was the supply track that did it. Thanks for the info.

Hello Bujanx,

Unfortunately you refer to the old rules (post from 2015). FFG has made a rule modification on the tiebreaker, and since 2019 the new tiebreaker is applied (except if you use the option at game creation to use the old one), which is:

1- Number of castle + strongholds
2- CLA : Controlled Land Areas
3- Supply
4- Iron Throne order

That's why the interface shows this "CLA" value.

Hope that clarifies.
