Topic: Bidding to pick a House

Dear Thronemaster Community,

I came up with an idea of rule variant that would allow initial bidding phase to pick houses. I am new here, so please let me know if this idea had already been discussed.

I guess players would start with some more power tokens than normal, lets say with 7. Bidding would be simmilar to the clash of kings. Position on "bidding track" would determine the order of house picking. Ties would be resolved randomly.

If you dont like to play specific House you bid hard and even if you cannot be sure to win first pick, you can safely avoid playing low tier houses or the ones you simply dont prefer. If you are happy to play any house than you do not bid at all and begin with potential advantage in power tokens.

I think this would bring very interesting part to the game - another fun, strategic phase. Also it would bring some balance. (I would guess Tyrell and Lanni would more often start with more power tokens than others in 6 standard 6 player games)

Please let me know your oppinion. I have no idea of how hard it would be to implement, but might be worth a try?

Best regards,

There was a similiar thing discussed some time ago. You have your starting tokens and if you bid all of them for greyjoy you Start with 0 tokens instead of 5.
If you dig around here you will find some variants

Thank you Harakon,

any of these variants have been implemented? I do not see such option while creating game.

I'd say it has very narrow applicability. It seems like it would only really function for a group of 6 people all in the sweet spot of being just experienced enough to know which houses are tougher to play, but not experienced enough to know how to play those houses, or to value early power token advantage (I'd take my chances with Lanni and 7 tokens over Greyjoy with 5 every single day of the week).

If you think Lanni and Tyrell need a boost, maybe just give them 6 tokens to start instead of 5? Lorewise, it has justification that the two richest houses in the kingdoms would start with more cash.

Thank you Ser Hodor,

how can I edit the number of starting tokens here?

The interface here can only be developed by a handful of coders that don't get paid to volunteer their time/skills. About the only thing you could do besides ask nicely would be to make a donation down at the bottom of the page to make the ask even nicer.
