Topic: Rules questions: 1st Ed. "when attacking" abilities,
Posted: 2018-Jun-27 04:03
Certain players (Vargo, Robb, and Victarion) have abilities that are listed as being in effect "when attacking." It seems that in the 2nd edition the language tends to specify "attacking or supporting" for these kinds of abilities, so I wondered if that meant that the ability was more narrow for those cards originally or if the game makers just chose to be more explicit. Do these abilities apply to supporting units, so long as you are marching into the attack, or do they only affect the marching units? As a follow up, for Victarion specifically, if ships are supporting a battle on land in which Greyjoy is marching, would his abilities apply to the supporting ships?

I'm not sure about that. First edition victarion does not say "including supporting ships", but says "attacking ships in your army". This should mean that only attacking ships count as +2, while supporting ships count as +1, as usual.
If not otherwise stated, it should only apply to units directly attacking.

Thanks for the replies. Would the same interpretation be in place for Vargo and Robb within games on this site? I think the wording is pretty similar

Wait, which is it? Do I have to go read the rules or something?!?
I'm playing Greyjoy in my first ever 1st edition game and was planning on using him as normal. If it does not apply to supporting ships while attacking, he's even more useless with his 0-strength...

afaik, supporting units do NOT count.

Victarion is still pretty strong though, but he can only be used for Seabattles.
