I like the expansion very much. I've played it two times now, Lannie85 visited me to play. Next Sunday we play again
The added features are great.
-Iron Bank = awesome addition.
-vassal system = very good. Playing with less than max players is not a problem now. The vassal system is a nice addition, so nice that I almost felt the urge to intentionally not play with the max amount of players.
-House Targaryen = nicely done, with the Dragon units that increase in power of the duration of the game.
-House Arryn = a strong turtle
-House Tyrell becomes stronger, he starts with a star and will have more space to 'breathe', since Martell could head east or gets pressure from the east.
Playing the expansion feels refreshing. In comparison to the normal 2nd edition, the Mother of Dragons expansion feels a bit less like chess. Due to some randomness with the Iron Bank, the dragon units and 'who controls the vassal', there is less room for detailed pre-established strategies.
I'll have to agree with everything
We finally get to play this expansion with four players, and it was amazing! It was very long game tough, about six hours, mainly because two of us were beginners in the base game.
I especially liked the vassal system. It was very interesting to think who you should pick for your vassal and what to do with him, because he could be your opponents vassal next round. I liked it so much, that I don't think I'll ever want to play this with max players. I'm curious to see how the game changes with more players and fewer vassals.
We found one thing that was a bit confusing about vassals. When in combat, vassals take seven sellsword cards, shuffle them and draw 3 for their hand. The big question is, when two vassals are in combat, who gets to draw first? We couldn't find any mention about this in the rulebook, faq, errata, or internet. We figured that it is done by iron throne order, but it would be nice to know for sure.
It was also very comforting to see that Targaryen is more than just dragons and don't debent on them very heavily, atleast not when against beginners. In our game Targ was unlucky to lose all his dragons in early game, but he was still fighting for the victory until the very end.
