Topic: Highest combat strength you can possibly have
Posted: 2021-Mar-03 16:36
Just out of curiosity, I tried to calculate what's the highest combat strength achievable in a standard 6p game. I ended up with 80 :

- For that, you need to have one player being attacked and all the others attacking or supporting the attacker.
- The Reach is chosen as the attack area because it's the territory with the most adjacent areas and especially land areas (a land area is better than a sea area because you can pack more combat strength in it).
- You have 7 territories to fill for the attackers, and 24 barrels on the map. So you can have at most 4 armies of 4 and 3 armies of 3 (2 players will have 2 attacking armies).
- So you can have 10 SE and 15 knights attacking, which makes a fighting strength of 70.
- you can have 4 S* on the map and 1 M*, so that's 5 more.
- the highest card is Stannis so that's 5 more. (Kevan and victarion aren't as good, because for every 1 combat strength, you have to sacrifice a KN for a ship or a footman, so you lose 1 combat stregth).µ

All in all, that makes 80.

Is it possible to achieve more ? Is it possible to recruit all these troops, move them in position around the reach and get the necessary barrels at the same time, all that in only 10 turns ?

Nice calculation.

I can top that, if we allow Dance with Dragons housecards. Aeron with 20 pt would give +20 in that case. So the max strength for DWD would be 95!

Interestingly, you can also go higher (to 81) with 1st edition cards (but Siege and knights like 2nd edition) by using Robb (strength 2 + 4 attacking knights = 6).

Moreover, in 1st edition with the expansion which included siege engines, you can muster 3 instead of 2 siege engines, so you would attack with 15SE + 10 knights, making it 91.

Vanilla 1st edition on the other hand only allowed for 4 knights and 0 SE. So you would need to attack with 20 knights + 5 footman, which gives a strength (with orders and Robb) of 56.

So, max. attack strengths are

56 in 1st edition vanilla (20 knight, 5 footman, Robb)
80 in 2nd edition vanilla (10 SE, 15 knights, Stannis)
81 for 1st edition cards and second edition units (10 SE, 15 knights, Robb)
91 in 1st edition with Siege Engines (15 SE, 10 knights, Robb)
95 in 2nd edition A Dance with Dragons expansion (10 SE, 15 knights, Aeron)

Martell chose (1) Arianne Martell to lead his forces.

if we talk standard 6p 2nd edition vanilla which isn't exactly the same as the online version, wildlings would also be in play.
So if the player on 4 supply would have been the highest bidder on a wildling attack against the card Rattleshirt's Raiders, there would be 5 players on 5 supply and the maximum strength could be increased to 82 by another Knight.

Is there a way to know the highest achieved combat strength on thronemaster ?
It would be amusing to know how close (or far) we've got from the max !

Quoted from a discussion a long time ago:

Case #3 Winterfell
Now this might be a stretch... but I'm trying to use victarion to his fullest potential. WF looks like a perfect spot for this one.
Greyjoy has stars, but just four Supply. His allies share the rest equally (5-5-5-5).
Greyjoy is marching* from Flint to Winterfell with double engines (9), one fleet supporting* from BoI (4), the other GJ fleet supporting from Shivering Sea (3), Victarion buffing all ships (9) = 25 CS.
Full stack support* from White Harbor (Martell) = 13
Full stack support* from Karhold (Baratheon) = 13
Full stack support* from Castle Black (Tyrell) = 13
Full stack support from Stony Shore (Lannister) = 12
Three knights support from Moat Cailin (Lannister) = 6
TOTAL = 82 CS (83 with VSB).

Boardgame version, "Rattleshirt" bonus for Greyjoy (+2 knight) and TOB cards lucky draw (+3) result in a whopping 88 Combat Strength!

A bit higher than CS 80 proposed above, but not by a huge margin.

You can even add one KN in the attacking army of GJ.

So, you have :
- 6 supporting ships = 6 CS
- 2 SE + 1KN attacking = 10 CS
- 8 SE supporting = 32 CS
- 11 KN supporting = 22 CS
- 4 S* + 1 M* = 5
- Victarion = 9

That's 84 !
WF has 7 adjacent areas like TR, but 2 of them are seas, so you can launch your attack from an 8th area, with give you 6 more CS, even if you lose 2 because of the printed combat strength of victarion. Very nice !

I don't think GJ could have three armies of 3 units, since he has two fleets of 3 ships already

I know this is a theoretical topic, but:
highest attack from database without cards nor players' support: 22 (#146619)

And at the very last move of the game to end a Loras move, with the Blade in hand. Logically on a Sea of Storms event. Beautiful.

Yep, that's why I mentioned Rattleshirt card bonus, as it allows another player to boost his Supply beyond what's on the map

Oh, I didn't even know that could be a thing; it's been too long since I've played in person and I've forgotten what the Wildling cards even do lol
