Topic: Wheel of Time - PBF#2 - Children of Light wins!
Posted: 2018-Sep-25 15:21
The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.
Hello,

This is the Wheel of Time Variant of the Game of Thrones Board game. It takes place in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time Universe just before the events of the first book. For those worrying about spoilers, you needn’t. Wheel of Times lead characters do not come from positions of nobility and hence do not appear in control of any of the nations.

I will be playing this via the forum. For those who want to play, please don’t get overly angry if there are some hiccups. It happens.

There should be some imbalance, with this setup but I don’t want there to be a faction that is so poor that no one wants to give them a go. I have made some small changes since the last game. If this game has any imbalances I will continue to change things up and will happily listen to any feedback at the end. I’ve tried my best to map the characters abilities match the characters personalities but it’s not perfect.

The Map:

Here is the basic map.

Due to the Wheel of Time’s geography it was difficult to create a map. There are large numbers of countries, most of which are completely landlocked. Because of this I had to turn the River Erinen into a pseudo-sea.

Here is the basic map ready to be played.

Here is the up to date map.

Even with the Erinen used as a sea, this Wheel of Time map is a little bit static so some two of the Westerland (Westeros) cards have been changed to allow fast travel between areas. They are as follows:

Portal Stones Found: For this turn and the next turn Toman Head and Haddon Mirk are considered adjacent.
Waygates Open:  For this turn and the next turn, Noren M’Shar and The Hills of Kintara are considered adjacent and Kinslayer’s Dagger and The Shadow Coast are considered adjacent.

Players with a vested interest in these areas need to take a possible invasions into account.

Other Geographical Features:

The Dark Forest is an empty square. If the Seanchan want to push through there to assault West Andor, then there is little opposition.
The Isle of Madmen has two prized barrels which make a good late game capture. The forces on the Island are quite strong with no castles or strongholds so you’ll have to invade with plenty of knights or good sea support.
Entering the Blight is a dangerous move, but it could prove fruitful. Whenever the round timer moves forward, 1 unit (chosen by the House in question) is destroyed. Because the deaths do not occur immediately, it is considered a legal area for retreat.

The Players:

I’d prefer players who aren’t brand new to the Game of Thrones board game as it may be difficult to both learn the game and work with a variant at the same time.

Please ensure you have the time to take part and make daily checks. I don’t want someone planning a holiday two weeks after joining and then leaving the game stuck. The previous game lasted around 5 months. If you must leave the game, you need to find a replacement. Failure to do so will result in being banned from future games.

Returning players must choose houses which they have not previously played for the time being.

The Houses:

Most of the house cards are taken from the original game or other variants found online. I tried to give each house a theme of sorts. I’ve also strived to make the abilities of the cards match the characters in the book.

Andor

The central nation in the books were skilled at expanding and holding the land they took so I’ve tried to create a house that can defend its gains. Andor should be a strong house, hamstrung with having to defend against a lot of foes. Their water access is poor but, on the upside, they have the best access to power generation and should be able to stay high on the tracks of influence.

Click for details.
Morgase Trakand – 4 If you win this battle you may take your opponents order token as if it were your own.
Gareth Byrne – 3 You may place a support+0 token or a Defence+1 token where participating units end this turn.
Martyn Tallanvor – 2 All of your participating Footman (including supporting Andoran footmen) add +2 combat strength instead of +1.
Galadedrid Damodred – 2 S
Gawyn Trakand – 1 If you are not being supported in this combat, this card gains two sword icons and two fortification icons.
Dyelin Taravin – 1 T
Elayne Trakand – 0 If you take casualties as a result of this combat you gain one muster point for each removed Andor unit. You may use these muster points on any Andor controlled area that has a crown icon at the end of this combat.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/excpetvwtd478kv/andor%20house%20cards.jpg?dl=0
Tracks: Iron=2nd, Fief=6th, Court=2nd

Andor starts with more ground forces than any other faction. They will require even more footmen to defend its borders. Remember footmen combine well with the Martyn house card. I’ve noticed Yara Greyjoy is often thrown away in the base game so I’ve given her clone (Gawyn) a tiny bit of a boost.

Aes Sedai

The White tower is broken into its different factions rather than individual house members. The Aes Sedai benefit from a very strong defensive position as Tar Valon is impossible to assault for any nation except maybe Saldaea. The cards available to the White Tower are mostly defensive or board controlling, designed to make other players stay away until the Aes Sedai are ready to fight on their own terms.

Click for details.
Red Ajah – 4 If the opposing House Card is male this card gains +1 combat strength and a sword icon.
Green Ajah – 3 SSS
Grey Ajah  – 2 You may immediately return your opponent's House card to his hand. He must then choose a different House card. If he has no other House cards in hand, he cannot use a House card this combat.
Brown Ajah  – 2 If you are attacking this House card has one sword. If you are defending, immediately move your opponent down one place on an influence track of your choice (prior to the final calculation of combat strength).
Yellow Ajah  – 1 You do not take casualties in this combat from House card abilities, Combat icons, or Tides of Battle cards.
White Ajah  – 1 T
Blue Ajah  – 0  If you win this combat gain 2 Power tokens. If you lose this combat remove 2 Power tokens from your opponent and any other player supporting them.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1fzorr0s73cboci/aes%20house%20cards.jpg?dl=0
Tracks: Iron=1st, Fief=4th, Court=6th

The Blue Ajah punishes players from ganging up on the tower and the Brown Ajah disincentivises Saldaea moving east early. The Reds are still as sexist as ever and more than ready to bring pain to the battlefield!

Tear

The Tear finds itself in a profitable position. They have to choose between going west into the White Cloaks or north into Andor or the Aes Sedai. All options carry big risks and rewards. The Tear House Cards are a mix of defensive and offensive.

Click for details.
Darlin Sisnera – Gain 1 Sword Icon for every track where the Tear is placed third or higher. Gain one Tower Icon if the Wheel of Time is in Tear possession.
Berelain sur Paendrag Paeron – 3 If you win this combat, you may upgrade one of your participating Footmen (or one supporting Tear Footman) to a Knight.
Weiramon Saniago – 2 S
Torean Andiama – 2 If you control Haddon Mirk after this combat, gain a number of Power tokens equal to the printed combat strength of your opponent’s played House card.
Astoril Damara – 1 If you are being supported in this combat, immediately reduce the combat strength of all non-Tear Ships to 0.
Juilin Sandar – 1 TT
Estanda – 0 Immediately remove one of your opponent's Order tokens in any area adjacent to the embattled area other than the March Order token used to start this combat.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ca3ch757x6l3d4d/tear%20house%20cards.jpg?dl=0
Tracks: Iron=4th, Fief=5th, Court=3rd

The Lords and Ladies of the Tear wield political power like a weapon and hence so should their leader Darlin who can be the weakest 4 card or the strongest. Moneybags, Torean should be able to assist him in staying at the top. Tear players should be able to take and hold the Kabal Deep, keeping Illian safe whilst making ventures north or west.

The Children of Light

Everyone’s favourite inquisition mad men are here with a suitably aggressive deck. The Children of Light have favourable geography and should hold two oceans until the Seanchan or Tear players hit midgame. Amadica can be used to support a large number of areas.

Click for details.
Pedron Niall – 4 T
Eamon Valda – 3 If “Pedron Niall” is in your discard pile, this card gains +1 combat strength and a sword icon.
Jaichim Carridin – 2 S
Geofram Bornhald – 2 If you are defending, this card gains 2 fortification icons. If you are attacking, this card gains a sword icon.
Dain Bornhald – 1 S
Rhadam Asunawa – 1 If you lose a Unit as a result of combat, return your entire House card discard pile into your hand (including this card).
Sebban Balwer – 0 You may immediately discard two Power tokens to discard Sebban Balwer and choose a different House Card from your hand (if able).
https://www.dropbox.com/s/7egbpd7cswixrb9/white%20cloaks%20cards.jpg?dl=0
Tracks: Iron=3rd, Fief=2nd, Court=4th

Calm, smart, Pedron Niall has always been a square peg in a round hole and I can think of no more fitting way to represent this than a tower on a 4 strength card in a deck filled with swords. When Niall is out of play, the vicious Valda gets to take centre stage. The Children of Light are relentless with two possible 4 strength cards and the ability reclaim their house cards.

Seanchan

The ever victorious army of the Seanchan have to make a choice between securing their seas and getting control of all 4 castles/strongholds.

Click for details.
The Daughter of the Nine Moons – 4 If your opponent has a higher position on Ta’varen Influence track than you, this card gains +1 combat strength.
Morat'raken – 3 If you are attacking and win this combat, move the March Order token used into the conquered area to resolve again later this round.
Turak Aladon – 2 SS
Furyk Karede – 2 T
Egeanin Tamarath – 1 If any player, other than your opponent, grants support to your opponent then they must grant that support to you instead.
Alivia  – 1 T
Suroth Sabelle Meldarath – 0 After combat, you may look at your opponent's hand and discard one card of your choice.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/81rnjvlxz2pqhyt/seanchan%20house%20cards.jpg?dl=0
Tracks: Iron=6th, Fief=3rd, Court=1st

Egeanin could save you from being backstabbed by an ally. With superior mustering the Seanchan really should rule the ocean. Having only one character with swords is a major weakness however.

Saldaea

Saldaea punishes those who skimp on footmen and knights. They are tough to oust from their homelands so don’t expect to have an easy fight with them. Strong house cards helps prevent them from being overrun by the Seanchan.

Click for details.
Rodel Ituralde – 4 Immediately destroy one of your opponent's attacking or defending Footmen units.
Ethenielle Cosaru Noramaga – 3 If you win this combat, you may choose the area to which your opponent retreats. You must choose a legal area where your opponent loses the fewest units.
Deira ni Ghaline t'Bashere – 2 S
Tenobia si Bashere Kazadi – 2 The printed combat strength of your opponent's House card is reduced to 0.
Alsalam Saeed Almadar – 1 T
Zavion of Gahaur – 1 If you are defending and lose this combat, your opponent may not move his units into the embattled area. They return to the area from which they marched. Your own units must still retreat.
Davram Bashere – 0 This card gains +1 combat strength for each attacking and defending Siege Engine. Double your support, defence and march bonuses for this combat.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/bmex5caq9rkz9la/Saldaea%20house%20cards.jpg?dl=0
Tracks: Iron=5th, Fief=1st, Court=5th

As the blight does not immediately kill any units, Ethenielle can force opposing units it if she wins in combat. If Saldaea can hold Seanchan away in the early rounds, they should be primed to cut apart their neighbours in the later rounds.
Areaname: order
Areaname: order
Areaname: order
Special Orders available/used:  ?/?
When your turn is done, check who is the next player, write it in your post and send that player a private message to let him know he/she has to move

Getting involved in combat:
- Combat command should be formatted like this: “Housename is attacking Housename from Areaname in Areaname with Placeholder.” And should be sent both to the moderator and the opposing player.
- If either player has nearby support units they will be assumed to have supported in battle unless otherwise stated within 6 hours.
- Players A and B may request support from other houses, both via forum and PM.
- If no neutral support has been received within 24 hours, if both players have sent through their house cards or if all other houses have declared support/non-interference then play will continue
- Player A sends a PM with his chosen house card to the Moderator and writes this to the forum;
- Player B can write his house card directly into the forum, as he knows that Player A has already chosen his house card;
- Player A writes his house card to the forum as well;
- One of the two players might use the Heron Marked Blade;
- The Moderator will put up a display for the results of the battle.
Okay, here’s our players so far: Nomaris, Simoneon, Harakon, Tworiverstabac, Jold and Folly99. We need 2 more.

Here’s a little bit of background flavour on each faction for those who want to choose their side. Everyone else will be given a faction by a random draw.

Andor Harakon

Noble Andor lies at the heart of the Westerlands with the largest standing army. It has existed since the days of Arthur Hawking. A matriarchal empire that is vital in the war against the shadow. House Trakand has ruled Andor since NE972. In order for that war to be won, Andor must be strong. Forward the White Lion of Andor!
Andor most resembles the British Empire.

Aes Sedai Necrarch

Aes Sedai is Old Tongue for “servants of all” although they may have drifted from this since the age of legends. Back then they had both male and female channelers (magic) users but since The Breaking all males go made after prolonged magic usage. The Red Ajah now hunt down and “still” any male magic users. The Tower is broken into Ajahs who each have their own aims. The Red’s hunt down wayward use of magic. The Greens prepare for the final battle. The Greys act as political mediators. The Browns gather knowledge. The Yellows focus on healing. The Blues focus on justice. The Whites study philosophy. When united, the tower is a force to fear.
Aes Sedai most resemble Vatican City and the Roman Catholic Church.

Tear Rhaegar

When the Tear falls, the Dragon will return and he shall break the world. That will not happen if he High Lords of the Tear have anything to say about it. A rich trading city with strong ties to Mayene, the Tear has never been conquered. Defend your holdings and expand to ensure it stays that way.
The Tear most resembles Hellenic Troy.

The Children of Light Folly99

In a world so full of evil only the Children of Light can save us. Monsters of the Dark One leak from the Blight in the North. The Seanchan invade from the west riding their shadow-spawn beasts. In the North East the witches of Tar Valon rule supreme, with Andor ruled by one of their number. If you think the Tear is free from the Dark Ones influence then you are surely mistaken. To save the world, first it must be cleansed of its iniquities.
The Children of Light most resemble North American Puritans.

Seanchan Nomaris

The Seanchan have returned to the Westlands with their Ever Victorious Army to tame the region. For too long it has been a fractured mess. When Hawking, the founder of the Empire, ruled the region was peaceful. Allowing the channelers to run around unleashed has led to chaos.
Seanchan most resembles Imperial Japan and the Persian Empire.

Saldaea Jold

The Borderlanders face attack from the Blight regularly and now they are expected to sit back as the Seanchan encroach on them from the east? With, no assistance forthcoming from the Aes Sedai it’s time to take measures into their own hands and break the nations that betray them. For the Saldaeans, war isn’t an event. The frontlines of battle are their homes.
Saldaea most resembles Middle-Eastern Nomads.

I would like to play, if you still have openings. I don't know anything about Wheel of Time, but from what I gather, this is not required. I may be picking up the books sometime soon, as I have received several recommendations, and at this point, I think is may be required reading.

Any house will do. They are all just funny, meaningless, names at the moment.
