Topic: Seriously? Noob or Srsly? Newb

Firstly let me say most of the people here have been more than welcoming and patient with their time. That said, some members need to hold their tongue if they lack the patience to deal with questions.

Not everyone is brilliant with forums or computers general, I haven't played a board game since I was a kid and decided to give this a go to kill some time and enjoy myself. I often use the shoutbox for quickfire questions that I know can be answered quickly and simply, if I made a forum post for every question I have I would have 15 forum posts by now. I understand it is mainly for finding games, but if it can save a forum post then why not?

I don't want to be the "new guy making noise" but I'm not the only one on the end of this and see it happening to others. The green PBEM games are there for a reason and I have played by doing and rewatching the tutorial, so there is still a lot missing but I can play the game no problem. But I don't have an intricate understanding of it like some. And yes I did read the rules, and no I still don't follow it all. Sorry if you can't handle that.

It should be fun. And one person in particular is taking away from that.

Thank you to the people who have helped me, and a big "stfu" to the people who want to throw "Noob", "Newb" (the cool spelling it seems) and "srsly?" when questions are asked.

And thats me done venting.

In fact, the exact word is Newbie, so the right abreviation is Newb and Noob is the cool spelling (cause it rhymes with boob «12 yo giggling in the background»).

No seriously, I think the problem here is as you said, the lobby chat is made to help make and ask for games.

The forum section has a search function and it should be used. I know you are referring to something that happened to you personnaly, but imagine if every new members asked 5-10 questions on the chat, and it's most of them the same...the chat would be useless. Already, when there is no more than 2 conversations going on this chat it's really hard to follow.

Another important point is that this game is kinda hard to grasp and there are still some deep rules that are quite grey on their applications. For this reason, most question can't be answered quickly with a complete answer and thus, the chat is not the right place to do so.

I would recommend you use the chat of beginners game to ask question, even if they have no relations to the game being played at all.

Also, the search function is your best friend on the forum during your first times here.

Finally, remember, «every pro gamer was a noob once», so don't be too sensitive and roll with it, in a week you won't be a noob anymore lol

I'll create a pbem game for beginners with your name in it and feel free to ask every question you may have, I'll happily answer every one of them to the best of my ability.

You are right and make great points on the forums.

For some of my questions the answers really were short, simple and they were answered with one response in the chat box.

I think the big thing is that not everyone wants to read forums, search and become an expert on the game before they have even played a round. That takes time and for some people it can only be learnt from doing. I know I'm such a person.

So if I'm in a game the last thing I want to do is look for forum posts when I can just ask a quick "Hey, got a question real quick. Can my PT's be used to buy units?" really is yes or no. I remembered they were used for the card decks and holding lands in place of units but couldn't remember if they could be used to purchase units themselves.

Thats all really, I know it sounds whiney and over the top but I ave to say... I just hate rude people. Thats all.

Thanks for your input on the matter though, it does make sense.

Who said that?
The shoutbox has no specific use. It's what you make of it.

There are a lot of rules and the game does require a learning curve so don't worry if you don't understand all of them at once!

Sorry JM,

I was certain I had read this somewhere else. Won't make that mistake again.

@Slider: Please, continue asking people any questions! If someone is overly rude in a game chat, feel free to file a report, and if it was in the shout box, contact any staff member.

@all + slider
Since I know you dont like my answers let me add one thing:
Yes my answers in the shoutbox can be rude sometimes.
BUT
I remember at least two times, where I told you two times the same thing in a neutral tone. The 3rd time I lost myself a bit.
I cant feed you the answer so there is need of a bit help by your side too. If you ask a question, read the answers to it.
If you dont know about sth, read the FAQs and use the forum. Everything can be found here. Not long time ago I had a question on Roose Bolton and Patchface in 2nd edition.
I posted it in the shoutbox and AFTER that, I searched the forum.
FAQ answered my question.

My point is: It is pretty annoying if you tell somebody two times that 2*2=4 and on the other side of the screen is just continuing posting and not thinking for himself(every newbie included).

Everyone else was a newbie to this side sometime, but if you do as asked(read the welcome letter and the forum post about differences between 2nd boardgame and this side), 95% of the questions are not neccessary.

Disclaimer: This is me posting as a person, not as a staff member. There's nothing official about my stance here.

Fair explanation Harakon. I don't think calling someone a 'newbie' to their face is ever warranted. Period.

That aside, acknowledging that you are a newbie is probably a good thing (unless you aren't..., obviously). A learning curve is ten times steeper if you don't acknowledge the fact that you don't know all that much.

I think the big thing is that not everyone wants to read forums, search and become an expert on the game before they have even played a round.

To be fair there is a non-trivial difference between this, and not having read the rules at all (as you stated in the shoutbox that you had not done).

I meant rules as in "kingmaking" and not rules as in "how to play".

Also Harakon I didn't even realise you were talking to me until you started getting all bum sore and typing in caps.

Someone asked the other day in the shoutbox "How do I check my stats" and you threw a "Srsly?" at them. Yes, even I see that as quite silly but I'd never just say "Seriously?"

I know all about helping and educating people as it was my job. And I always spoke to them like adults regardless.

I know it was in there somewhere because my reply was "Calling me a newb reinforces my position and does not offend me"

Better new players who ask some more questions than really necessary, than those that didn't understand half the game but act like they have to explain everyone else how to play it...
That said, when you put in just a bit of effort, you can find a lot of answers yourself - so if you repeatedly ask very basic things (outside of a beginners game chat, where it is encouraged) you should not be too suprised when some people are a bit annoyed.
Nevertheless, usually you get your answers here. On the internet, you should be able to just ignore certain comments anyway...

not noop! noob! it rhymes with boob! You have to know your name!
