@Nightcrawler: for beginners it’s good to create 3p games. They go faster and it’s therefore more fun to learn how to play

Topic: Ship teleportation
Posted: 2021-Aug-11 07:13
The situation is like this.
As Martell I’m marching from Stormsend to take Dragonstone from Bara.
I have two ships in port at SE and there are two ships in port at DS.
I have six ships already, but if I march without leaving a token my ships at SE will get destroyed.
The ships at SE should get destroyed before take over of DS, thus giving me free capacity to take over the ships in port at DS.
Can anyone confirm if it is possible and if it is implemented that way here?

According to rules it is correct, your ships gets destroyed ater leaving the SE and they go to your reserve, after capturing DS you can replace ships there, not sure how it is implemented here, never had that situation

Same as Mark, seems correct as for rules, but really unsure of the implementation, as you are being asked if you want to takeover ships when initiating the combat.

Try and let us know

Good point Necrarch, I will probably be at my ship limit when combat is initiated and all four ships will get destroyed.
I think I have to try it however

The ships disappear in one port only to instantaneously appear in another port. Teleportation gentlemen - and it has proven useful in one out of 99 games already

If you would loose the battle and at least one unit retreats to the initial Port Castle the ships in the port would survive as well. Which is kind of strange I think.

That is strange, since it implies that you don’t give up control of the area during the battle.

The same is not the case when you march out of another players home castle without leaving a token.
In that case you can’t retreat to the same castle.

true, so a little inconsistency there. Don't know if this is covered in any FAQs

If you lose the battle, you don't take control of your opponents ships

Then it’s just a bug here. When you leave the area without leaving a token behind the area is temporary uncontrolled, thus leading to the ships getting destroyed immediately (or converted back to the capital owner in case).

When they are not destroyed here I guess the ship handling just happens in the wrong timing window: after battle when units possibly have retreated back to the starting region, leading to the ships not being destroyed. If so this is a bug.

There are some rules which contradict each other.
This issue was discussed a few times already. Even if you technically left your original area marching out to attack another area, your units are still bound to the area you came from since it is not allowed to occupy an area with two houses at the same time.
You should lose your ships regarding the rules, but since you never left by winning the battle ships stay, at least on thronemaster.net

That is not true and explicitly clarified in FAQ:

Q: If a player marches all their land units out of an area (but not their home area) that is connected to a Port with their ships, and in doing so chooses not to leave behind a power token, what happens to that player’s ships in the Port?
A: Ships left in a Port that is connected to an uncontrolled land area are immediately destroyed. If the land area connected to the Port is an enemy home area, those ships instead may immediately be replaced with ships of that enemy’s House (as per the rules under “Taking Control of Enemy Ports” on page 25).

Together with

Q: When a player resolves a March order, if they march all of their units out of another player’s homearea and do not leave behind a power token to establish control, where must they retreat if they were to lose the ensuing combat?
A: They would have no legal target for retreat and would thus be destroyed.

it's clear that units leave the area for the battle and are not bound to their starting region anymore. For the same reason you are asked to leave a Power token behind BEFORE you start the battle. If you could do it after battle you
wouldn't need to leave a Power token in case you lose. From my point of view the situation is clear.

A: They would have no legal target for retreat and would thus be destroyed.

This applies to Winterfell, Pyke, Lannisport, Dragonstone, Highgarden, and Sunspear, as leaving an enemy home area without putting a power token automatically and immediately reverts the home area back to control of the original owner.

However, this DOESN'T apply to any other land area, specifically in this case the land areas with ports: Oldtown and Storm's End (the original reason this came up). Those are neutral areas and therefore would become neutral again after leaving it without a power token. Neutral areas are free areas to which an army can retreat; thus, the losing army is able to retreat back to that area and re-establish control again.

However, I still agree that the first part applies here, as the land area is technically uncontrolled during the time the units are battling, and thus the ships should be destroyed
