Topic: How to leave a game?
Posted: 2020-May-24 23:06
I'm trying to leave some games so I can get through my intro beginner games, but I am at the game limit cap and a few of these games haven't gotten past the first turn. This is a real problem when you have to get a certain number of games competed before you can make games with your friends. It's a real barrier for this website that should be fixed. There are people in our friend group already giving up on the game.

- Look at the commands in the rules: commands like /voteabort allow to abort a game (I think it needs 4 votes for a 6p).

- For games that are after turn 1, you can ask for a replacement.

- If you can't reach the votes, you can ask a mod to do for you the manual abort on turn 1 (I believe in Player replacements forum) after a week of inactivity.

- A game with no action at all will auto-abort after 14 days - it's long, but when you consider that people can take two weeks of holidays and ask gently to wait for a game launched for a long time, not that long neither.

You missed a very important thing Necrarch!

For aborting the game, you need to have to consent of ALL active players before you start the voteabort.

For round 1 games which are clearly taking too long you can ofcourse use the command more freely!

Have you ever thought about the reasons why we have it like this and do not allow everyone to create games at the instant?

@harakon, no shit that's the reason why you have it programmed like that. Have you ever thought to create another game type, like friends only for beginners? To help people learn and actually get into the game rather just think that this site was programmed by an elitist who wants you to drop all the money on the board game first? Oh maybe add a timer for 5 days without moves to auto-delete that game type? Whoa a lot of thinking going on here Mr. Think A lot.

Hmmm, Skribbz, that is not a way to talk, and especially not to moderators, who don't program anything but just try to help a community by taking some time in their own spare time to do their best.

However, you can't maintain a site like this one with just letting everyone do what one wants at any time. You need a few rules, and one of them here is that you are supposed to show you are a fair player meaning to be respectful of some rules, i.e. typically end up every game you start, even if you are completely wiped out of the board - you have just experienced how annoying it is when someone leaves. To give you an idea, the first game I played on that site took 4 replacements out of the 6 initial players and more than 3 months to complete - most of the games I had started in the meanwhile had completed before that one.

Clearly, it is annoying, and that is precisely why there is an entrance selection: you have to show that you will play abiding by the rules (respect, willingness to end all games, take care not to spoil, etc.) before getting to the status of a "full right" player.

The other way around, i.e. trusting everyone with full rights and reducing them when people fail, I think had been tried a long time ago, but showed too many limits as too many games were spoilt by unfinishers, unrespecters or spoilers.

I think that is what Harakon, one of our very respected mods, means: the rules are implemented that way precisely to avoid bad things to happen to all players here - new or not - but need for everyone that starts to be a little patient at the beginning to get to a place where things are even more pleasant.

If you think it is elitism, you can. I tend to see that as just a minor filter that will only rebuke the most unpatient people, but I beleive the whole experience is well worth the wait.

Finally, if you want to make suggestions to the site owner / programmer for a better play experience for everyone, all the better. There is a dedicated section for that. However, to do so, you need to have relevant input, and to do so, you have to know a little better how things are done around here.

Hope that helps and clarifies, and good game to all.

Thanks for a real response Necrarch. If you'll see above, my original question was answered and I responded with thank you. It was after that when Harakon came in an offended me by asking me if I ever thought of the obvious.

Here's what is fucking annoying. I have a group of 8 friends who have been playing online board games since the quarantine. For example, majorcommand.com, which is programmed in flash and barely runs in a browser. It took us 1 hour to figure out how to get everyone around the flash restrictions, learn the UI & start playing with our friends. I get that you want to have a good community, but we've been trying to play this for a week now and still haven't actually been able to have a real game with all of us.

So sure, you have your rules for a reason and I can respect that, but your barrier to entry is so steep I can't imagine how many people you turn away who would be respectful and great for the community without Harakon turning them away by not giving thoughtful responses.

What Necrearch said and my 2 cents; make a shout in the shoutbox or pm a council member/super MoT to get a password protected game for you and your friends is all it takes. And if you want to become MoT yourself quick, be dedicated and play a couple of fast 3 player games to get there.

We will never get rid of the requirements to play at least 5 games to become MoT, it has been a real mess before that unfortunately.

I truly think Harakon did not mean to offend you, honestly. It is a quick and a bit sharp question, I believe, but I can tell you he is a very polite player so I would tend to believe he was not meaning bad.

Perhaps missing a little
Good game around anyway !

Things settle, everyone's happy then.

Enjoy the game and convince your friends that if they just go over the 5 game barrier, you have here a great community of players, including real monsters that are able to chop your army quicker than the Mountain having fun with maids.

With some more experience, you also have great tournaments like the World Cup, the World Championship, the League of Ice and Fire... I joined about a year ago, and I have to say I have had lots of fun around here.
